  • Innovative re-use of site-sourced stone from a quarry found at the property and novel interpretations of common material details make this landscape blend seamlessly with its setting. Re-envisioning of a pool and associated gathering spaces for this Woodstock residence meant taking inspiration from surrounding visible ledge and hemlock forests onsite, resulting in a pool deck that floats adjacent to native grasses and shrubs and makes the most of views of the Catskills. Nature is woven seamlessly through the user experience in a way meant to provoke consideration of context: boulders unearthed in the excavation process of the pool punctuate pathways and are scribed into the deck, and edges of hardscape are obscured with plantings, linking the language of the Catskills to this wooded escape. Part of ALA's involvement in this project has also included flagging out trails onsite to engage visitors in the quarry history of the landscape- cementing the connection between the site's indigenous materials and those used in the design.
